Oxford University open days - 30 June & 1 July 2010
As prospective students descended on Oxford to look around the university, SPEAK supporters were out in force for both days to inform those attending the open days what Oxford University won’t be telling or showing them: the imprisonment, mutilation and killing of over 150, 000 animals in its laboratories every year.
Hardly an 'open day' when the doors of its labs are locked and the suffering of the animals inside are hidden away from compassionate eyes, the university tries its best to paint a picture of itself as the best of the best. But with SPEAK supporters present, those attending had the chance to learn the truth about just what happens at Oxford University for those unlucky enough to end up being used in its experiments - pain, suffering and death.
SPEAK was present with a highly visual stall, banners and placards in the main science area alongside the psychology, zoology and biology departments. Information was handed out to all those visiting this area, the new animal torture lab pointed out and many signatures were collected. Many of the parents and prospective students were shocked and surprised that the outdated and barbaric practice of vivisection was alive and prospering in what they thought was a progressive place of learning. It had never occurred to them that animals would still be used by an institution they had been led to believe was a world leader. SPEAK was thanked for being there and informing people and a number of individuals said that what they had learnt about the animals animal abuse occurring at this institution would definitely influence their decision of which university they attend and what course they choose to do. The message taken away by many of those attending 2010's open day is that Oxford University is not a place of academic excellence; it is a place of brutality and abuse. For older articles go to our archive page
