The Students Return

Demo Reports - 13 & 14 October 2011

This week was the start of the new academic year for those studying at Oxford University, and a chance for SPEAK supporters to  remind the students, both old and new, that animals are being brutalised just metres from where they walk.

The regular weekly Thursday demo was a chance to give the students a different kind of education - about what university researchers really get up to behind the locked doors of their labs and the huge amount of suffering they inflict on the animals imprisoned within. Discussions were held with a number of people who wanted to find out more, both about the ethical opposition to vivisection as well as the scientific arguments.

The support from passing motorists was frequently heard, as usual, with horns being used as well as waves and thumbs up signs.

On Friday SPEAK supporters were present outside the Sheldonion Theatre with both a demonstration and information stall. A large number of leaflets were taken by those leaving the degree ceremony, while even more were taken by tourists and passers by, many of whom were horrified that Oxford University’s labs are torturing animals.
