Making Waves
River Demo - Saturday 2 July 2011
SPEAK supporters took advantage of the warm summer weather to get the attention of all those on and near the Thames by taking to the river in a boat covered in banners and placards.
Chanting over the megaphone, along with being highly visual, meant that all the picnickers, leisure cruisers, walkers, cyclists, punters, rowers, cricket players and pub drinkers became very aware of the unjustifiably cruel experiments Oxford University carries out on animals.
Starting off from The Head of the River Pub and followed along by activists leafleting on the towpath, the boat made its way up the river and past the riverside pub, before turning around and going back. There was a great response from many of the other boaters with shouts of well done and the thumbs up sign being shown. Others waved and shouted their condemnation of the university.
