An evening out with Colin Blakemore

Demo report 10th October

SPEAK supporters gathered outside the Science Oxford centre on Saint Clements St where Colin Blakemore was due to deliver a lecture on 'Ethics' in research. The advertisment for the evening's lecture offered the chance to hear Colin Blakemore wrestle with issues like: 'When should research stop', 'Are there moral lines that research should never be allowed to cross', 'should we place ethical limitations on research'. Of course, for sentient beings like Felix, the questions have come too late and are being answered by people like Colin Blakemore, who by his own admission does not recognise that animals like Felix have the capability to suffer or to be aware of themselves or the world around them. In fact the question of ethics in research does not even stretch to non human animals in the closed world of Oxford University. (Click here for detailed information on Colin Blakemore's notorious 'research')

SPEAK campaigners were both outside and inside the venue to ensure that the suffering of animals like Felix did register with those who had come to discuss 'ethics in research'. Outside, placards and banners lined the busy road, whilst inside, questions were asked about animal abuse at Oxford. It was noteworthy that many of those leaving the lecture took SPEAK leaflets, although it was noticed that Colin Blakemore was led from a side entrance and sped away in a waiting car.

With Colin Blakemore returning to his Oxford professorship, his tenureship at the MRC having come to an end (whether he jumped or was pushed is unclear), SPEAK will be challenging his attempts to defend the indefensible acts of animal abuse carried out by himself and his colleagues in Oxford Univerity labs at every given opportunity.
