The Felix Campaign TourCambridge University, Tuesday 9th October SPEAK supporters met with local activists in Cambridge to continue the campaign to highlight the suffering and subsequent killing of Felix and to draw attention to all animal abuse at universities in the U.K. Despite the heavy, non-stop rain, the campaigners arrived outside the infamous 'Downing' site in the centre of Cambridge, where for many decades sentient animals like Felix have suffered and died in the name of 'academia'. It was not so long ago that this institution failed in its attempt to build what would have been the largest primate research facility in Europe, and it was local campaigners, along with SPEAC (Stop Primate Experiments at Cambridge), who together successfully stopped this nightmare project from becoming a reality. It is also noteworthy that the 'New Labour' government of the time wholeheartedly supported Cambridge University in its bid to build the primate lab (just as they have with Oxford University). In fact, they went so far as to claim the lab was "in the national interest" and appointed an 'independent' inspector to oversee a public enquiry into the issue. Stuart Nixon, who headed the enquiry, did not agree with the government, and his conclusion at the end of the public enquiry was that 'in fact Cambridge University and the government had failed to demonstrate that this lab was in the national interest' and recommended that planning permission be refused. The rest, as they say, is history. SPEAK supporters and local campaigners from Cambridge Animal Rights gave out many leaflets and drew a lot of attention from students and passing members of the public. Eventually, soaked to the skin, we were forced to seek shelter and dry out, but once again we have showed that no amount of bad weather or hostile policing will deter us from exposing animal abuse under the guise of academia and from challenging the scientific dogma of those who seek to silence the voice of progress and real ethics.
