In July 2006, the BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) used the Freedom of Information Act to request that universities should disclose the number of primates they had used in experiments in two particular years and for a summary of their current primate research. A number of universities complied with the request but six, including Oxford, refused to do so. Oxford University proffered the ridiculous argument that disclosing the information would be likely to endanger the safety of the researchers and would prejudice their commercial interests.

April is the month that has been dedicated to the fight against the use of animals in scientific research and experimentation. It culminates, on 24th, in World Day for animals in laboratories. Every year there are demonstrations throughout the UK and the world to commemorate this day aand to remember all those sentient beings who have suffered and died in the last year – and a reminder of why we fight to end it.

On Saturday 13th June, 2009, Oxford University bestowed degrees upon another group of graduates and, as ever, SPEAK Campaign supporters were in attendance outside the Sheldonian Theatre on Broad Street to demand an end to the university’s reliance on, and promotion of, vivisection within its laboratories which sees, at any one time, over 16,000 animals imprisoned, tortured and then killed in hideously cruel experiments.

SPEAK supporters were out in force around the Eros statue in London Piccadilly convincing people that Oxford is a tourist destination that should be avoided whilst it remains a city of animal abuse. There were genuine expressions of horror on peoples’ faces as they learnt the truth of what happens to animals imprisoned inside Oxford University – they are brutalised, tormented and exploited before being killed once they are longer deemed useful.

Those linked with Oxford University showed, once again, how they seem to be above the law after a man physically attacked a SPEAK supporter and received no repercussions during this demonstration. The attack by the middle aged man on a female senior citizen took place in front of Thames Valley Police officers who did nothing but have a small chat to the man, who was then able to go on his way into the ceremony.

At the end of a week that saw Oxford University forced to reveal the shameful extent of the suffering inflicted upon non-consenting, living beings within its laboratories, SPEAK Campaign supporters held a demonstration on Broad Street on May 9th, 2009, to coincide with a university degree ceremony day.
